We are in process of designing a power factor corrected LED power supply rated about 50W. We have zeroed on single stage PFC flyback converter. We have short listed some controllers such as L6561 / L6562A of ST, UCC28810 of TI & NCP1606A / B of ONSEMI, which appear to be direct replacement of each other.

We are also looking at FAN7530 & FAN6961 which though not direct replacements, are functionally very similar.

Has anyone used this chips & what is the experience. In terms of the specs. the critical part is to meet EN61000-3-2(THD Limits) for Class C.

There are many controller IC's which can be made to control a single-stage PFC for non-isolated applications. Power Integrations Link-Switch series would be my recommendation. If this product must be isolated however (and remain single-stage), a specialized transformer must be used as well as a dedicated control loop and drive stage. I have created several isolated single-stage PFC designs, for both commercial and aerospace, and I can help you develop a similar product.

hello sir,

yes we have used ucc 28019AD Its good upto 2kw, also the L6562A looks like a compact solution.

kindly mail me at usa_042000@yahoo.com

Thanks everyone for the feedback.

We have designed 2 ratings of PFC flyback converters. A 20W design using fairchild's FAN7530 & a 40W design using ST's L6561.

Both designs are working well, but we find that L6561 is much better than FAN7560. Since L6561 & L6562A are fully compatible, in due course we will upgrade to L6562A.

I used for such a design the S.T L6562 which I consider the best
suited for such application.
For line dimmable version a very special care has to be taken
for the build of a hold-up current for the Triac.
A constant current output, regulated and changeable was designed with:
Vout=10-50V; Imax=1.5A; P.F>0.98; Flyback, one stage converter.

I designed a full LED driver based on the
I.C`s of S.T : L6562AD with following technical
parameters:Input=90-265VAC;Pout=40W;Vout=10-40VDC;Iout=1.5Amax and regulated (internal dimming);full dimmable by Home Phase Dimmer (active current new concept for Dimmer`s Triac hold-up current generation); OVP & OCP; P.F>0.98 for full power (No external dimmer);
I founf this I.C as the best suitable for this application.

Pawan,

I am just now reading an application note writen by Michaeel O'Loughlin at Texas Instruments. I believe it describes operation of a single chip of the type you are seeking.

I am also interested in designing power solutions for LED lighting, and perhaps would be considered a potential competitor. Still, if you would like, I would encourage you to contact me at ray@voltampconsulting.com for further correspondence on this subject.

Along the way to investigate best solutions, I recognized a possible element of that best solution. Here is a published paper that describes some essence of subject matter declared in my recent patent application: http://voltampconsulting.com/power_efficiency.html.

Best regards,
Ray

I have already designed a pcb on one of the above Ics and would be powering it up very soon and may be and can then share the test results.
Secondly i would like to clarify certain points raised in the discussion . This is a single stage pfc corrected flyback converter.
The only disadvantage of this scheme is that the o/p will have 100hz or twice the line frequency ripple and will not be pure dc as we have in conventional PFC + PWM stages.

Please go trough AN1060 @ www.st.com They give a starter idea to use single chip pfc cum fly back. I have pcb Design and practical sample with few modifications.

Dr. Manoj Rathi,

I have scanned plenty of application literature published by the respective chip manufacturers. practically everyone except NXP has published material on this topic. Evaluation boards are also available.

My query was just to know as whether anyone has used a particular chip, as it will enable us to make a right choice.

Your insight on the subject matter will be extremely useful.

Regards,

Rajendra

Dear Rajendra,

The chips you have described are just the PFC pre-regulator. You can't implement the PFC + flyback using the same control chip.
