Hello, I need to build an inverter that can handle around 5500 watts continuous run. I plan to feed this inverter from either one 120v battery bank or two 60v banks running parallel, ten 12v batteries either way. I need an inverter design that is durable (start/run compressor motors, electric heaters...) and, because Im working with a limited amount of amp hours, something that is as efficient as posable. Im considering using a McMurray-Bedford SCR Inverter design with an Ott filter for this, but as I dont know a lot about Inverters, Im wondering how this design compares to other designs, as far as efficiency and durability. If some one could help me with this it would be very helpful.
Back in the late 60s I was part of a design team that tried to implement Ott filters on bipolar transistor inverters but failed after many attempts and varied approaches. The maths "worked" but the filter did not.

Sine wave Inverter with Ott filter

Details of Ott filter can be found in the book "Principles of Inverter Circuits" by B.D. Bedford & Richard G. Hoft, (available at amazon.com). But more efficient high frequency sine pwm methods are used now instead low frequency switching with bulky & costly filters.

I noticed that you refered to an OTT FILTER. I have been trying to find information on this filter, but I cannot find any. Please tell me where I can find anything on the Ott Filter. Thanks, Manny manceb@cablespeed.com

The inverter design using the abovementioned technology is outdated. There are many far better solutions avilable using power MOSFETS or IGFETS for the waveform development. If you need help and I think you do, please contact me. We have many years experience in this field and can save you many months as well as dollars developing this technology.
