Topic Any scope for a Power Supply Engineer as Consultant

Message
HI,

I just came across this site. Not sure if anybody can give me their personal opinion. Presently I am employed, I have 18+ years of power supply design experience. Commercial AC-DC and DC-DC. upto 3kW. Both conventional and resonant. At my homde I have an well equipped power electronics lab, starting from an AC Source, everthing except a spectrum analazer. Can add that too.

The point is all the equipment is loosing value over time, I am not doinng anything which earns any $. The idea was to start something on my own, but after the dotcom bust that rosy market is no longer there. It is nowoccuring me to sell off all the stuff on EBAY!

Does anyone know any opportunity for someone like me. I can do design, consultancy, trouble shoot, Failure Analysis, Design Analysis, Stress testing. I am especially good in cost reduction and redesign of existing design to reduce cost. etc etc. I can also get complete design done and sample delivered from Asia.

Will appeciate any feedback posted here. Any thoughts?

We are looking for someone that can help us redesign inverters, battery chargers, and battery monitors. We have been sourcing our products from China, but now would like to have more control and build them here. We are looking for someone who can reverse engineer and set up production.

As long as you're doing related work, you can at least write-off depreciation of your lab on your income taxes. If employed then do it as unreimbursed employee expenses.

Yes, you can work as a consultant but the challenge is in building an initial client base. From there, business expands by word-of-mouth. Do some independent work and then write a few magazine articles to trade journals as a trick for free advertising. Also, promote your services on sites, like this one.

Of course, with the lab you are 90% of the way to starting your own business.

HI,
I am looking for a job in this branch because I like electronics and I am able to design, repair or consult on this. I don' t have state of the art equipment, but I can use the minimum equipment to solve a problem. I work as a DCS-PLC-FI Engineer now, but this is not my dream.

Does anyone know something or any opportunity for somebody like me?!

I 'll apreciate your thoughts at ionutnusoreanu@yahoo.com,
or here. Thanks a lot.
