POSITION SUMMARY
Develops and supports TWMC's Research & Development short and long term plans for design of motors, drives, generators, and alternative forms of power transmission equipment, power electronics, and other wire to load systems considerations.
Designs power electronics inside inverters that control motors and generators. Design V/Hz, Vector, and Regenerative inverter control of machines and multi-level low/medium voltage products. Uses computer simulation tools and verifies models.
Designs circuits, creates printed circuit board schematics, bill of materials, and layouts on ORCAD (or equivalent), specifies and buys components, builds and tests printed circuit boards. Designs analog and digital circuitry which uses processors, field programmable gate arrays, A/D converters, D/A converters, fiber optics, signal shifters, op amps, current sources, power supplies, and other circuits. Designs electrically isolated circuits. Products use processors and FPGA and are programmed with Labview, C, C++, Verilog, and VISSIM software for control and interfaces.
Designs thermal systems involving packaging power electronic components such as semiconductors, magnetics, printed circuit boards, heat sinks, fans, busbars, and wiring.
Assists in designing magnetic components such as reactors and transformers.
Design IGBT, diodes, and SCR control circuits, protection circuits, and packaging. Knowledge of operation, protection and packaging principles for film/electrolytic capacitors, reactors, transformers, semiconductor fuses, transient absorbers, and such.
Designs products for electronic control of machines and uses practical understanding of machine principles such a inrush, overload, magnetizing current, torque, rpm, harmonics, poles, power, horsepower, and other machine parameters. Designs products for variable torque, constant torque, and regenerative applications.
Designs products in a wide range of applications (industrial, marine, research, wind turbine) and in a wide range of environments (indoors, outdoors, saltwater, land, sea, remote, congested, mobile, fixed) and in a wide range of power levels (460V to 13800V, 200A to 20,000A).
Assists in product documentation. Responsible for product specifications. Responsible for product electrical system schematic. Responsible for assisting in product packaging and documentation. Responsible for providing technical support for design of low inductance busbar design, electrical spacing, conductor size and ratings, component locations, and other. Products are designed to meet UL, CSA, and IEC standards.
Responsible for testing products, assemblies, and subassemblies. Often testing requires collaboration with more than one team member. Responsible for lab test report documentation. Responsible for developing test fixtures and documentation for prototype and production testing.
Analyzes drive reliability using RELEX reliability analyzing tools and develops tests to measure/increase reliability.
Assists developing computer simulations using MATLAB or SIMULINK or other equivalent tool to develop and test software.
Assists in troubleshooting in lab, factory floor, and/or field.
POWER ELECTRONICS: GENERAL
Requires prior experience in design or technically supporting or manufacturing or servicing new electronic products.
Creating new products requires personal commitment of the individual with respect to technical growth. This commitment is demonstrated in meeting goals in less than optimal circumstances which will require extra effort to overcome obstacles.
Assist supporting manufacturing/test/troubleshooting efforts within global environment.
Ability to travel outside of the United States.
Job will include training and practicing high quality design processes.
Works individually and/or within teams to develop concepts through discussion, analyzing, building, testing, and simulating. Take steps toward ideas to better understand them and to develop them more efficiently.
Ability to listen, analyze problems, share ideas, and simplify to understand. Personal tasks and goals often are clarified inside group discussions. Along with extra study outside the office, these discussions are excellent ways to gain in knowledge.
Prepares technical reports and presentations for use by engineering or management personnel or sales or service. These reports include test data, procedures, cost summary/analysis, pictures, field reports, manufacturing instructions, software documentation, product features, and other such things.
Understands priorities and goals - helps identify delays. Keeps up to date on overall/individual project schedules and milestones, and communicates with other team members on results. Adjusts priorities based on feedback from others with regard to overall team progress.
Works well within a team environment that may include governmental, academic, and industrial players on large scale multi-faceted projects. Able to work with broad and narrow scope. Pursue technical and non-technical solutions that are not in your primary field of expertise.
Self-motivated and strives to learn how best to create products and do so efficiently. Manages time well. Has individual and team commitment. Results orientated.
Required to have lab experience. Operates modern lab equipment and keeps up to date with latest lab equipment technology and safety practices.
General computer skills are required (email, word processing, spread sheets).
Support patents and patent applications. Assist searching existing patent documentation and white papers on topic or ideas or another existing patent.
Attend and/or present papers on behalf of TWMC at trade shows and Universities. Use these opportunities to gain better skills and/or industry/competitor information and/or make new peer relationships.
Regular attendance is an essential function of this position.
Compliance with applicable Company policies concerning maintaining a drug free workplace is required.
Compliance with all Company policies is required, including adherence to Company ISO 9001 Standards and compliance with Company Affirmative Action Plan and Company Safety procedures.
Incorporate the Standards of Excellence as outlined by TWMC (Pride, Desire, Teamwork, Attention to Detail, and Follow-through) into daily activities in order to create a Total Quality environment through personal commitment to excellence.
Other functions as required (non-essential functions).
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum of a Bachelor's degree (in Electrical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering or Computer Science and/or Industrial Engineering) from four-year college or university (Master's or PHD Degree Preferred) and five to ten years in field of specialization; or equivalent combination of experience and/or training. Graduate degree is preferred and at least 5 years leading complex project teams.
Knowledgeable in the fundamentals of electrical design concepts of electric motors and generators (induction, synchronous, and direct current) or electronic design and/or packaging and/or software design concepts of power electronics.
